However, the go-to for most people is insurance. Ideally you won’t have to use it, especially in their younger years, but the annual average premiums can still be in the hundreds of dollars. This can be a significant chunk of change. Understandably, it’s tempting to swerve pet insurance when tallying all the potential fees.
However, we think it’s a big mistake, and these are the reasons why.

In a cruel twist of fate, a pet policy ends up saving money in the long-term. This is because animals are curious and use their mouths to test things out. If you have a dog, you know how much stuff they can get into that can potentially harm them.
When an emergency does occur, it could be as high as $5,000 to repair the damage, an amount most people don’t have hidden under their beds. Thankfully, insurers pick up the tab, saving you a fortune.

Insurance companies get a bad rap, yet they aren’t as strict as you might imagine. Usually, there are tons of different packages available, which means you can tailor your premiums to your pet’s needs. For example, dogs can suffer from hereditary or breed-specific conditions. A bulldog is notorious for having breathing problems. Once you know what they are likely and unlikely to experience, you can swap the insurance features around, allowing you to cover the ailments that are most likely to occur in the future.

Nobody likes to imagine the worst-case scenario. However, your dog isn’t going to live forever, so it’s smart to have a plan for when they pass away. Again, as long as your pet insurance coverage is extensive enough, you can rely on an insurer to pay for a pets end of life costs. With pet insurance you may be more apt to go with a more expensive way of remembering your pet, like getting a headstone for pets, or a fancy urn.

Dogs can be smart about a lot of things, but what they chew on and even swallow doesn’t always seem to be one of them. Constantly worrying about your pet isn’t the answer as the anxiety will harm you mentally and physically. Instead, investing in a backup plan is the key as it makes sure that you can respond quickly and effectively, and an insurance policy is the perfect safety net. Having the possibility of a large vet bill can be a detour to getting treatment in a timely manner for many issues that may arise. Knowing that you won’t owe thousands of dollars to get a limp checked out could save you a lot of time and money if you get it checked out as soon as you notice it.
We personally have pet insurance on our dog. He is only just over 2 years old and it has already paid off in having to give him supplements daily. He has also had a few minor things like ear infections and skin rash issues that have come up and required expensive medications to resolve. Our previous Labrador did not have insurance and he tore his ACL, and eventually passed away from cancer. In both cases, pet insurance would have allowed us to more aggressively treat both aliments if we choose to do so. We may have even caught both issues sooner as his ACL was a limp before he actually injured it more severally.
