Space To Adjust

The first thing that you are going to need to do is give the new puppy or dog space to adjust. Try to remember that even though you know that you have no intention of hurting it, it doesn’t know that. It’s in a strange place, with strange people and your new little friend is going to need some time to adjust to the new surroundings. It likely won’t take too long, so we wouldn’t worry about it. Just make sure that you are showing patience if they hide from you at first, because it’s all a little overwhelming.

Start Training Soon

As soon as the new pup settles in, you need to start training it. You want to ensure that they do their business outside rather than on your carpet, as well as know what you want them to do, and what not to do. That is why we created a FREE training series for new puppy owners that is also great for older pups in new environments. The sooner you start training them, the sooner they are going to get to where they need to be in terms of skills and obedience.

If puppy training doesn’t work for you and your new family member though, you don’t need to push it. Just by knowing what you want them to do instead of letting them determine what they want to do, you can manage to raise and integrate a puppy or adult dog into your home.

Love And Affection

The final thing that we are going to mention is that you should be giving the new dog a lot of love and affection. You would give your kids lots of love and affection, and your new dog should be no different. Pet them, stroke them, cuddle them, let them lick your face and so on. Show them you love them, and let them love you in return. It’s a beautiful bond that grows when you spend time nurturing it, and it’s going to be special, of that we can promise.

Hopefully, you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you need to remember when you are adding a new dog to your family. It takes time for things to settle into a new kind of normal, but it will happen over time. Your new little family member is going to be scared but excited, so make sure that you are doing everything in your power to make them feel safe and welcome.
