Dogs: Not Just Pets, but Companions

Dogs are more than just pets; they're our buddies who help us through the busy and quiet times of life. Teaching them the 'sit' on cue behavior is a great way to gain their attention and it is generally easy for them to learn. So, let's dive into the 'why', 'when', and the often-overlooked value of the 'sit' behavior.

So, why should you teach your dog to 'sit'. Because having a well-behaved dog is awesome, and teaching them to 'sit' is often a good starting point with any training plan. It is often the first behavior we teach dogs and puppies because it is an easy behavior to teach, practice, and works for so many scenarios. Every dog and owner have different situations and obstacles, so sometimes it can take a little bit of thinking outside the box if they are not catching on immediately. If you are having trouble then this is a perfect time to discuss issues and troubleshoot with a trainer.

How to Teach Your Dog to 'Sit'

Training your dog to sit is usually pretty easy and works for young and older dogs. First, grab a treat to get your dog's attention. Then, move your hand up and a bit back over their head. This will make them look up and sit. When your dog sits, quickly say "yes" and/or use a clicker, and give the treat as a reward for doing it correctly. Having a clicker and treats ready is super important for training. Always reward your dog when they do something you like.

Once your dog gets what you want when you show them, it's time to use your voice. Saying 'sit' becomes more than just a word; it tells your dog to stop and listen. Mixing this spoken command with a hand signal helps your dog switch from just watching to listening and doing what you ask. Practice a lot, and your dog will link the word 'sit' to the action, showing just how smart they are.

The Importance of Patience in Teaching 'Sit'

Learning 'sit' is only the start. The next step is teaching your dog to stay sitting for longer and longer periods. Waiting a bit longer each time before giving the treat can help teach your dog patience. This part of training is super important. It teaches your dog to control themselves when you are you asking, which is helpful in many parts of their life.

When is a good time to use the 'sit' behavior? Using the 'sit' on cue behavior daily shows how important and useful it is. Take every chance to practice, like a calm morning or when you have friends over, to help make the command stronger. 'Sit' isn't just a simple command; it's a way to encourage good manners, calmness, and order in how your dog acts in many different situations.

Bonus of using 'sit' often is you can capture the behavior to become an auto sit. So every time they want something they come to you and sit without you asking.
